I will be thinking of you and Coltrane and cheering you both to the finish--if only in spirit.

Message: Hi Cabell,
I'm catching you at the end of your journey, I guess -- better late than never! I spent most of my summer in Paris, which is nice, but I envy somewhat your outdoors travels. I enjoyed reading some of your postings right now as I take a break from grad school research. See you in Chicago in a few weeks!

Message: Cabell--

It seems like just yesterday that you were about to climb the Rockies...I'm excited to see how far you've come. Today was spent on an apartment chase in DC that was only fruitful in the way motivational speakers think of such things, but I'm excited to jump back into the SEGL mix soon (I've been to Paris, Seattle, Oregon, and now DC in the last couple of weeks). The new web site is about to go up, among many other things. Hope things are well--I'm thinking of you.

Message: I will add one more bit of possibly useful Information, you don't really need to take any water down the C&O towpath, as there are water pumps every 3 miles, and also camp grounds every 3 miles. LIke it said, it's even better than the Katy Trail.

Message: Ok, i was reading that you thinking about hiking the appalachian trail. the Appalachian trail really is a trail, I mean, it's not actually along roads and stuff. It is actually as good as it sounds, i hiked the northern half and it was very remote. I didn't see as much wildlife as i thought I would. Kayaking is much better for seeing wildlife, although you don't meet as many people. the animals all dwell near the river, and come to it to drink, deer and such will usually just look at you as you float quietly by, whereas if you're hiking, the animals all run off before you even see them.

Of the three, hiking, biking Kayaking, I honestly like Kayaking the best, you can store 100lbs of goods in a good size Kayak. If you got a GPS you're all set then, you can figure out where to get out, just trace your route on google earth or something.

I would probably prefer biking if not for trucks coming both ways and such on roads with no shoulder. I can't deal with that. Also, dogs, are worse than trucks. it's hard to outrun some of them on a mountainbike.
I rode my bike about 50 miles north and encountered 30 separate instances of dogs chasing me, so, Indiana is not the best place in the world to go cycling. It can be beautiful though. I went the other day and only got chased once, so I don't know why that one road was so full of dogs. weird.

Yeah, i've been tryin to see you on the google earth satellite.(j/k) You can almost see where the gravel roads are on the google satellite images. the free version you can't, not sure if you can on the paid service.

Message: Just wanted to ad, if this doesn't satisfy your wanderlust, you could get a nice motor boat and you can cruise all the way from Ohio, down the ohio river, to the Wabash, to the Missouri, to the mississippi, to New Orleans. No cars, you can take your dog. Maybe a little far to paddle a kayak, but if you biked across the country, maybe not.

there was an article in the paper about a guy and his teenage son doing it in a canoe, I guess it's totally navigable the whole way.

Message: I've been readin your journal, at http://dogonwheels.us/journal.html, great stuff.

i've always wanted to ride my bike across country, but wow, you took your dog, now that takes guts. I admire you.

Sounds like maybe you're gettin a little frustrated, been reading your latest entry, your Indiana entry. I just wanted to say, I've been down the Ohio Canal Towpath, I'm assuming the trail goes down the Ohio/Chesapeake towpath. Once you reach that, you're in Bike riding heaven, it's better than the Katy Trail. I would have thought the trail would start there, a great place to start/end, Washington DC. It's sort of like the east coast, I guess, if you considered the Chesapeake Bay the coast.

Oh, well, it's been fascinating reading your entry, as I've thought alot about attempting such a trek, every little detail you provide is helpful in considering all the potential scenarios, possible problems that I could encounter.
I hiked the appalachian trail before, but I think I like biking more, because it's just easier, you go faster, no weight on your back.

Good luck, You're probably out of Indiana by now, I guess it was probably prettier than Utah, Nevada.

I'm gonna read your older entries too, this is great stuff.

Totally stinks that you were waylayed, but I'm glad to hear that it's an equipment problem rather than a physical one. Message: Hello Everyone!

The website hasn't seen much activity recently. I had a brief time to answer emails when I passed through St. Louis, but computers have been hard to find. Jen's company through Missouri was wonderful, and the weather through Illinois was great. Unfortunately, I've hit a snag today. A critical piece on the trailer broke last night. I thought I could ride through it and get it fixed in New Albany, IN, or Louisville, KY, but this morning it became clear that I really shouldn't keep riding on it. Now I am stopped at a Motel 6 in Dale, IN. Cycletote is sending me a replacement part via next day air, but I'll be here through tomorrow night.

I am posting here because the computer at the hotel won't let me log into Blogger. But I'll have the day tomorrow. I'll try to get into Dale to use a computer at the public library. Maybe I'll even be able to download more pictures. In the meantime, feel free to distract me from HBO. Give me a call at 812-937-2294. I am in room 108.

Message: Hi Cabell,
I think it is super neat what you are doing! If you need a place to stay in Cincinnati, please drop me an e-mail. I have a guest room and my dog Pontchartrain (I rescued her down in New Orleans last year after the hurricane) is very sweet with other dogs. I have a bicycle rack for my car and can come pick you up once you are in the vicinity if necessary and would be glad to take Coltrane to my vet, Dr. Bob Biederman at the Cincinnati Central Animal Hospital for a complimentary check up since he has been such a trooper on your journey. There's a reliable cycling shop not far from my house where I get my Mongoose serviced if you need to get your bike checked out. I'll try to send some snacks for you and the pooch in the mail. I am inspired by your trip as it makes me think of a favorite quote: "Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." — Ralph Waldo Emerson. Best wishes for continued safety and adventure on your trail blazing expedition!

Sincerely, Loreen in Cincinnati, Ohio

P.S. If you are riding through the Columbus, Ohio area my best friend lives there and would certainly be glad to provide you with a home cooked meal and might be able to connect you with free lodgings through her church community. Also have good friends that are professors living in the Juniata College town of Huntingdon, PA and friends I made while doing animal rescue in New Orleans that live in Richmond, VA area that could be of help (and are total dog lovers).

Message: Dear Cabell,

Well, I am reading newspaper accounts of the massive heat wave (or blanket) covering much of the country and thinking of you and Coltrane trying just to get from one place to another. I looked at your photos while at work today, and am glad to see that you are not turning bright red; I guess all that sunscreen makes a significant difference! I see what you mean about not a tree to be seen in most of Nevada. Love those rocks in Utah, and what a relief to see mountains again in Colorado! I was especially appreciative of Mt. Rainier today as I spied it above its nest of smog.

I trust you have met your gracious hostess today and have been able to thank her for a pad to spread out in for a couple of days. How nice to find people from time to time who really do make us welcome as we pass along.

I love hearing your progress and your encounters. I got your second installment of dog food and provisions in the mail today so expect they will await you at the designated post offices.

Many blessings and much love,

Mom

Message: Dear Cabell,

I just watched your slide shows and read your commentary. I bet that sunburn is well established, and now that you are on a more populated route you may be able to find friends to take you picture rather than relying on your long arms. It is great fun to see some of where you have traveled. I am glad to see your rig and Coltrane snuggled into his nest. It IS a beautiful bike!! Good colors, too.

Sounds like today was a pretty wet one, and welcome after all the heat you've been pedeling through. I hope Coltrane's pad is dry by tomorrow morning.

Your packages are on the way to Grand Junction and will hopefully be awaiting you when you get that far. All those maps will definitely weigh you down through Colorado.

Have fun and stay away from those big semi's.

Love you,

Mom

We enjoyed his company very much. We may never see or hear from him again but we are greatful to have met a well accomplished gentleman with such disipline to make this trip for a well deserved cause. We hope that he makes it to his destination safely and with much success. Message: Cabell, just hung up after talking with your dad. So glad to hear you are on the road with your pooch. Now that you are trucking across NV I guess you know what we Arizonans have to put up with in the summer in order to have such beautiful weather the other 9 months of the year. Your adventure reminds me of a good friend who rode from Phoenix to SF (all up hill by the way) and it rained cats and dogs the first 7 days out. A couple years later, for his 50th birthday, he decided going downhill made a lot more sense, so he took off for Cabo San Lucas. Now that was an adventure! Three of us met him there to help celebrate and we had a ball.

Will be thinking about you. Keep a smile on your face and my the wind be always be at your back. Patty joins me in sending very best wishes for a safe and FUN trip.

A note from the Global Dialogues Institute (the SEGL pilot program I'm doing for Duke this summer) where the students have just started researching their paper (they've chosen the situation in the Ivory Coast). It's a great group of students this year, and despite being up well past 2am for most of the last week and a half, I'm in good spirits. On the SEGL front, I've gotten a commitment from Miller & Chevalier to do my nonprofit incorporation--that's thanks to you--and I think I've found an excellent web designer who will redo my web site for a nominal fee. So things are progressing very well there, especially considering how all-consuming this program is. Hope things are well on the road...I'll write more soon.

While you were busy biking the city clearly relocated itself to avoid detection for some reason. I'll leave you with some words from John Amatt (organizer/participant in Canada's first successful expedition to the summit of Mt Everest):

"Adventure isn't hanging on a rope off the side of a mountain. Adventure is an attitude that we must apply to the day to day obstacles of life -- facing new challenges, seizing new opportunities, testing our resources a gainst the unknown and in the process, discovering our own unique potential."

Message: To Cabell's friends and supporters:

I left Cabell yesterday morning (June 17) at a parking lot in Lafayette, CA. After receiving a nice sendoff from some friends in San Francisco the evening of June 14, he found the first couple of days of his ride (June 15 and 16) especially strenuous. The American Discovery Trail includes several steep up-and-down passages over rugged terrain in Marin County between its start at Point Reyes National Seashore and the Golden Gate Bridge, as well as a daunting ascent over steep hills in Berkeley just east of the University of California campus. As a result, Cabell was able to cover only about 80 miles in the first two days of his ride, rather than the 120 or so he had expected. In addition to the climbing, he was finding the ruggedness of some of the the trails challenging for his bike. And all this before he began pulling the 75-pound Coltrane and his 3-foot wide cart, and before Cabell began preparing his own meals and sleeping under the stars. (I kept Coltrane with me for the first couple of days of the ride, as dogs are not allowed either in the Point Reyes park or on the San Francisco-Oakland ferry. Cabell met us at the end of those days for restaurant meals and motel stays).

Notwithstanding the demands of the first two days and the obvious ones ahead, when I left Cabell he seemed in good spirits and comfortable coping with the emerging challenges. He reported a few sore muscles, but nothing serious, a major accomplishment given the nature of the first two days of riding. It looked as if the next stretch might consist of somewhat more hospitable terrain, and Cabell suggested he might use roads (as opposed to trails) somewhat more frequently than he had anticipated, at least in the early going. Presumably his conditioning will also improve significantly in the comming days and weeks.

I expect the early part of the ride will continue to test his mettle, and I know he would appreciate your prayers and best wishes as he proceeds.

John King

Well, the journey begins. What an adventure! And, as luck (or, rather, great mapping skill) would have it, you are going to travel through one of the most beautiful areas of the country: mid-Missouri (no laughing, please - it's actually quite pretty). As you may remember, my mother lives in Missouri - and believe it or not, you are going to go right through her town and thus through my stomping grounds. (She lives in Booneville - and there's a pretty little winery in Rocheport, at the top of a crest overlooking the river. It's worth a layover just for the view.) Understanding that you won't be able to say with certainty where you'll be landing when, I thought I'd offer to try and meet up with you along the trail when you go through that area. At the very least, I can likely provide some insider's info on that part of your trip.

I'm so excited for you, to be finally heading out on this fantastic, unique adventure. I hope this e-mail you finds you and your pooch doing well...
Take care, and best of luck!

Message: Dear Cabell,

Well, you are launched. I have been thinking about you much of today and yesterday, wondering how the bike and racks are feeling as you get started on this venture. I know Coltrane is not yet with you, as you move through parkland where dogs are not allowed, and I am so grateful that your dad is able to help covey your dog to that place on the trail from which the two of you can go on together. I look out my window at blustery Seattle weather and think about the days you will encounter challenging weather. I read your entry about the trial trip you took, and am impressed with all the experiences you will undoubtedly encounter when you will have to think creatively and rise to the challenge, whatever it is.

My love and prayers are with you. I hope this is a real "vision quest" this summer. This may be the toughest and most revealing quarter you have during graduate school!

I love you, every day, all day...

Mom

Message: Good luck, first day on the road and all. Just so you know, your plants are still safe with us. I've moved the two larger ones outside, primarily because Jethro thought that they were food products. After his second late-night vomit due to plant intake I decided they would be happier, and have an increased survival rate, if they lived on the back porch.

Message: Dear Cabell,

I have meant to write you after reading your e-mail back in March. As the saying goes, "it's better late than never." I apologize for the delay, and it's certainly great to hear from you.

You are probably on the road already, so I'll keep it short. I will in fact be in Boston early summer, teaching summer program at Fay School before returning to DC around August, 12. I'd love to see you, maybe even bike the last few days with you. What you are doing is truly amazing and admirable.

I will sure get in touch with Noah, as I think his plan for such educational program is absolutely fantastic. I am even more thrilled that The School for Ethics and Global Leadership is scheduled to open in DC. I wish to be part of this very special project; to provide any kind of help I could.

Good luck with your trip and see you in DC.

Message: The Last Supper: My wife and I just returned home from enjoying Cabell's Last Supper with him and a bunch of his friends at Cha Cha Cha's in San Francisco. I'd like to report that Cabell is in fine physical shape, he is clean shaven, his hair is cut high-and-tight, and he actually smells pretty good. His caloric intake (of tapas and sangria) was high and should get him through his first day on the bike. Good luck Cabell! (and don't forget the Butt Butter!)

I think what you are doing is great. I biked across europe a couple of years ago and it was a great experience. I just loved the time alone to just think and enjoy the surrounding. I definetly be making a donation. I am actually in the process of building a clinic in africa. best of luck and email if you are going for a drink on wed night before you leave

Message: While traveling, you might want to share information about www.4pawsforability.org. It is a great organization that really helps people, and it is quickly growing. They might take in shelter dogs that you find along the way or help disabled people that you meet on your trip. Plus, Karen, the Executive Director, knows dog-friendly people with good hearts all across the country. Good luck!

Message: Cabell,

You're crazy. But I admire your courage and sense of adventure! And I love your dog.

Good luck to you and if you need help... I know people in CA & DC which will be of almost no help to you. But feel free to ask anyway.

Best,
Elf

Message: This message is a test. I expect this board will see more activity after the ride begins, and it makes sense to use it to communicate with me. It is also a way to communicate with each other, to involve all of you in the ride. Write whatever you want.

I imagine it particularly as a place where people with whom I speak, friends I visit, and new friends I discover on the trail might share their own travel journal of sorts. It will also be a way to contact me while I am riding. There will be stretches when I am unable to access the internet myself, but if you leave a message for me here, my parents and other friends with whom I will keep in touch will see it and pass it on. I encourage you also to use it just to say hello, tell a joke, or share an anecdote. Thanks!
