On the Trail:
I will carry my cell phone and a solar charger, but I won't often have service and would rather not post the number online.  Though I will check it only infrequently, the best way to contact me directly will be through the message board on this site.  I will be in regular contact with Noah and with members of my family.  If you post a message to me publicly, they will be able to pass it on even when I don't have email access.  If your message is not urgent or you'd prefer it weren't public, please write to the above email address, and I'll reply when I can.

Soon I will post the addresses for a handful of post offices at which I will make a point to stop along the way.  If you send a letter or a small package you will absolutely brighten my day.

When you mail something general delivery, the mail will be held for up to 30 days and can be picked up at any retail window.  Mail should be addressed to:

Cabell King
General Delivery
[City, State, Zip+9999]

Elsewhere on the label you might note something like: "ADT biker, ETA [month/day]."

Tips for Mailing to General Delivery:
1. Write clearly, and don't forget a return address.

2. To track my progress and insure that your package has been delivered, you might consider Delivery Confirmation.  The USPS now has a service where you enter the confirmation number online and they email you when the shipment has been picked up (http://www.usps.com/).  If you print online shipping labels, there is apparently no additional cost for delivery confirmation (https://sss-web.usps.com/ds/jsps/index.jsp).

3. I understand that Priority packages can be forwarded if they are unopened. I don't actually know how this would work in practice, but conceivably if I missed a package at one location one of us could call the post office and have it forwarded to some future waypoint.  It might almost be worth trying purposefully sometime.

4. You can't send UPS or FedEx to General delivery.

Tips for Care Packages:
1. If you are sending food, I like dried apples, apricots, cranberries, and cherries, jerky, candy, and light, easy-to-cook meals.  I am not a big fan of nuts (except salted peanuts), or sugared fruits.  Homemade treats are tough to beat, but remember that I don't need a whole batch of cookies.  Of course, there are innumerable other foods one could send.  I'm pretty easy to please, and everything tastes better after you've been on the road.  Look for food items with strong flavor - fireballs, jolly ranchers, jelly beans, dried fruits, etc.  I do not have any food allergies.

2. Good non-food items include sample sized hand creams (not heavily scented), Chapstick/Blistex with SPF, socks (I will try to fill in a brand here), sample dental floss or a new toothbrush.  You could also send treats for Coltrane.

3. Other good items are color copies of photos. I won't  need to carry extra weight of many photos, but I can share a photocopy until I am ready to discard it or use it as fire starter. Include poems, jokes, stories, or other things I may find humorous or entertaining.  Remember, this is three months without TV or internet.

4. I won't carry a lot of mailing supplies with me.  If you send me a stamped envelope (maybe with a sheet of paper inside) or postcard, I'll be glad to write a letter and drop it back in the mail.

5. Send everything in small portions. For example, instead of sending a magazine, send the interesting article.  Don’t forget that if you send a three-pound package, I have to carry that three pounds up the next hill.

6. Include freezer type Ziplocs in which to store anything you send. And an extra one or two never hurt either.

7. Please label anything that I might not be able to identify.

8. If you are short of ideas, a nice idea might be to send just a little cash with instructions to spend it on something special: ice cream, a drink at a local bar, a good meal, a night in a motel - whatever you might buy if you were on the trail with me.
